Special Weather Statement issued April 12 at 2:03PM PDT by NWS Reno NV

WIND: Increasing Tuesday with the strongest winds likely to be south of US-50. Northerly gusts 25-35 mph for areas north of US-50 with southwest wind gusts 35-45 mph south of there. Wind prone areas along US-395 and US-95 could see gusts exceed 50 mph. Winds to turn north for all locations by the late afternoon and early evening. Expect choppy lakes, turbulence and wind shear for aviation, and potential travel difficulties for high profile vehicles. Areas of blowing dust are also expected through the west-central Nevada Basin and Range.
RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS: These will be hit or miss with brief periods of heavier showers possible Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. While it will be predominately rain for the lower elevations, snow pellets may mix in at times. Higher elevation passes in the Sierra such as Mt Rose Hwy, Sonora Pass, Ebbetts Pass, Monitor Pass, Carson Pass, Donner Summit and Tioga Pass could see several inches of snow. Accumulations are likely to be short-lived, or possibly non-existent, during the daylight hours given the time of year. Isolated thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon both days.
TEMPERATURES: Much cooler than we have experienced lately with highs only reaching into the 50s or near 60 degrees even in the warmer valleys Tuesday and Wednesday. The wind on Tuesday will make it feel that much colder. Lows will drop near or below freezing, especially outside of urban centers, Wednesday and Thursday morning. Protect any sensitive early season vegetation.
FIRE CONCERNS: Tuesday in the lower eastern Sierra (Swall Meadows & Chalfant Valley in particular) and souther Mineral County will be the primary concerns. Please see the Fire Weather Watch for more information.
