NSS Convention ~ July 25-30, 2021

The 411 on 420

What's in a name?

If you don't know what the headline of this page means, just click through to the next one and forget you ever saw this. Otherwise, let's just get this out of the way. There's an elephant in the room and we'ed be remiss if we edgily avoided it.

First things first... The National Speleological Society is a science-based organization dedicated to the exploration, study and conservation of caves. The 2021 NSS Convention does not condone, endorse, or sanction the use of recreational cannabis at our event.

The convention team also recognizes that (at least in some parts of some states), the recreational use of this plant is legal - with some VERY strict exceptions that you must know. This is the only page on the website where we'll mention this. Any other use of the word "Weed" refers to the city's namesake - Abner Weed.

What you need to know:

Under California state law, recreational use of cannabis products is legal - but ONLY for personal use by adults at a private residence or at a sanctioned business location. All convention activities will be held on public property at College of the Siskiyous. Cannabis use on school grounds is officially illegal (including - and especially - in the dorms). You should also know that most of our area's caves are on federal land (where cannabis consumption remains a federal offense).

What else you need to know:

The convention security team's response to cannabis users will be directly proportional to how irresponsible or annoying they might be. This means that the infringement on other members' enjoyment of the convention might get you kicked out for an hour/day/week/whatever. Security will also have ZERO tolerance for under-21s consumption of any kind. Basically, if people behave like responsible adults, they will get treated as responsible adults.

The last thing you need to know:

The semi-un-official position of the convention is that we don't wish to deal with imaginary problems - unless they become real problems. If you have any questions about how this might relate to your visit to Weed, California, please contact Glen Malliet. You'll find his contact info on our staff page.

Oh yeah, by the way:

On April 20 (4/20), we plan to auction off registration #420 for the 2021 convention. Check back here for details at a later date.
