NSS 2021 Convention ~ June 28-July 2* Register

Luminary Series

During our annual conventions, the National Speleological Society records a series of talks featuring pioneering cave explorers, karst scientists, and other long-time NSS members. These talks are designed to give young and old cavers alike the opportunity to learn from some of the true superstars in our society. Speakers for the 2021 convention have not yet been selected, but will be posted here when the speakers are announced.

Here's a recent luminary talk from NSS caver, Bill Jones. This was recorded for our 2020 convention.

After graduation from high school in Fairmont, West Virginia, Bill Jones and a buddy set out on a much-anticipated road trip. The boys enjoyed a stop at Seneca Rocks and noticed a place on their map with the curious name Sinks of Gandy. They decided to check it out. Bill was mesmerized by a hillside that simply swallowed up a big surface stream. Two weeks later the guys were back with carbide lamp and helmet, and Jones began his career as a cave explorer.

Additional luminary talks may be found on the NSS website.
