Mount Shasta can be enjoyed by car... up to a point. But, if you plan on climbing the mountain, rangers from the Mount Shasta wilderness area want to remind everyone that this mountain is a world-class climbing challenge.
Castle Crags State Park Distance from convention: 24 miles.
Castle Crags is a dramatic and well-known rock formation in Northern California. Elevations range from 2,000 feet along the Sacramento River near the base of the crags, to over 6,500 feet at the summit of the tallest crag.
Lake Shasta Caverns Distance from convention: 54 miles.
Lake Shasta Caverns were part of life for the Wintu Indians, who lived in the area. J.A. Richardson, officially discovered the caverns in 1878. Since 1964, they have been opened as a natural attraction to the public.
Shasta Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam across the Sacramento River in Northern California. At 602 feet high, it is the eighth-tallest dam in the United States. Envisioned as early as 1919 as an effort to conserve, control, store, and distribute water to the Central Valley.
Medicine Lake Highlands Distance from convention: 68 miles.
The most diverse and least visited of the five volcanic centers in California is the Medicine Lake Highlands Volcanic Area, located on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The area contains hundreds of unique volcanic features and lava tube caves.
Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge Distance from convention: 79 miles.
The Hat Creek Radio Observatory was founded in the late 1950s by the newly created Radio Astronomy Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. The observatory is home to the Allen Telescope Array designed and owned by the SETI Institute in Mountain View, CA.
Lava Beds National Monument Distance from convention: 85 miles.
A part of the Medicine Lake Highlands, Lava Beds National Monument has been an exceptionally popular destination for western cavers for many decades. Through both our recreational and scientific collaborations, this park holds a special place in our hearts.
Lassen Volcanic National Park Distance from convention: 135 miles.
Although it's not exactly next door to Weed, California, this national park is a must-see if you're interested in volcanoes. Don't expect caves - there aren't any of significance here - but these mountains are still growing and they're doing it right in front of you.
