Lake Shasta Caverns

Lake Shasta Caverns is a National National Landmark and the only limestone show cave in Northern California. When you have a chance during the 2021 NSS Convention, this is a worthy destination to experience. The cave is located in the Permian McCloud Limestone of Shasta and Siskiyou counties and lies about 54 miles south of Weed along I-5.

Lava Beds National Monument

A part of the Medicine Lake Highlands, Lava Beds National Monument has been an exceptionally popular destination for western cavers for many decades. Through both our recreational and scientific collaborations, this park holds a special place in our hearts. At last count, the monument had over 850 recorded caves.

The McCloud Limestone

The McCloud Limestone is a cavernous formation of Lower Permian age located in the region near Shasta Lake in Northern California. The formation contains the commercial cave, Lake Shasta Caverns. This area will be featured during one of our geology field trips during the 2021 convention.

Medicine Lake Highlands

The most diverse and least visited of the five volcanic centers in California is the Medicine Lake Highlands Volcanic Area, located on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The area contains hundreds of unique volcanic features and lava tube caves. If you have the opportunity during your convention visit - don't miss this one!

Weed, California

Founded in 1897 by Abner Weed, this old-west lumber town rests at the junction between the Sierra Nevada Range to the south and the Cascade Range to the north. Located in extreme northern California, just 50 minutes south of the the Oregon border, the City of Weed will be a wonderful host for the National Speleological Society's annual convention from June 28-July 2, 2021.
